Basketball is on the move in Canada. More people are playing and enjoying the game across the country than ever before. Canadian players are having unprecedented success in the NCAA and as professionals from the NBA to leagues in countries all around the world. Canadian colleges and universities are loaded with homegrown talent. High schools and junior high programs are filled with eager players. Clubs and community programs are thriving.
There are more adults than ever playing the game. Basketball is the most popular sport among new Canadians and the fastest growing sport in the country. Basketball in Alberta is experiencing the same dynamic growth and success on courts all across the province and with players competing around the globe.
Basketball Alberta (BA) is leading the way in growing the game in its province with new player and coaching development programs for all levels and abilities. BA hosts unique events that are among the largest in Canada and North America. For instance, the upcoming U15 and U17 Canada Basketball Girls National Championships will be played in the world class facilities of Edmonton’s Saville Community Sports Centre from July 23 -30, 2015.
BA hosts the 100+ team Youth Provincial Championships in March, the BA 3on3 – Canada Quest (the largest in Canada) in June and the Canada West – ACAC Pre-Season Showcase in October featuring 20 – 30 post-secondary teams.
The Saville Centre is also home to the Canada Basketball Senior Women’s National Team (SWNT). Serving as their training headquarters, the Saville Centre will also play host to the FIBA America’s Championship for Women from August 9 – 16, 2015. Competing against some of the strongest basketball nations in the America’s, many of which rank among the top in the world, the SWNT will vie for a berth at the Rio 2016 Summer Games on home soil.
BA continues to be a national leader in basketball innovation with a commitment to grow the game from the grassroots up.
