EDMONTON, AB: Wildrose welcomed the proposal to extend Alberta’s sunshine list to include all agencies, boards and commissions (ABCs) with further study and an explanation for the higher indexed limit of $125,000 compared to current government of Alberta disclosure levels.
Bill 5, the Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act, sets an indexed limit of $125,000 for employees of public sector bodies to have their names and compensation disclosed. The current disclosure list for Alberta government employees is set at $104,000.
“Wildrose welcomes the step to bring more openness and transparency into government and its agencies – it’s something we have long called for,” Wildrose Shadow Accountability Minister Jason Nixon said. “However, the $20,000 discrepancy between the disclosure limit for government employees and for public sector bodies doesn’t make sense.”
Wildrose campaigned on expanding Alberta’s “sunshine list” salary and severance disclosure to include $100,000-plus annual earners, adjusted to the consumer price index.
“Albertans deserve to know where their tax dollars are going, and Bill 5 is a good first start,” Nixon said. “There needs to be accountability in the ABCs to move us away from the outrageous bloated salaries for high-ranking executives that has been a hallmark of the Alberta government.”
