Big Rock Teacher Honoured

Jennifer Markides - FSDJennifer Markides, a Montessori teacher at Big Rock School, was honoured at the Rupertsland Métis Recognition Dinner held in Edmonton on November 12th. The event promotes Métis excellence and recognizes success in employment, business and academic achievement.

Jennifer received a $10,000 Métis Education Foundation Graduate Award while in the second year of her Master’s program at the University of Calgary. A High River resident, she completed her final paper during the 2013 flood evacuation.

“It was a challenge to focus on school work when so much was unknown about the state of our community and home,” says Markides. “Writing was, at times, a welcome distraction from the constant worrying and speculation.”

Jennifer has since earned her Master of Education in the Graduate Division of Educational Research, specializing in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning.

“I feel fortunate to have had the support of The Rupertsland Institute – Métis Centre of Excellence to further my education. In my position with Foothills School Division, I strive to use my newfound knowledge to improve educational practice and to proudly represent my Métis community.”

Congratulations Jennifer!
