Banff, Alta – On February 26, 2019 Parks Canada employees located an improvised explosive device which had detonated within a garbage receptacle near Carrot Creek in Banff National Park. The device, which was of the type commonly referred to as a pipe bomb, had caused damage to the bin. The Banff RCMP have recovered the device and are investigating the incident. The RCMP and Parks Canada have checked numerous garbage bins within the park and have not located any other devices.
Staff Sergeant Michael Buxton-Carr said, “This event is considered at this time to be an act of vandalism rather than a deliberate intent to harm any person or to promote a cause. However, premature or delayed detonation of this amateur device could have caused significant injury to those who planted the device or to the employees who empty the garbage bin. Anyone who locates a similar device should not attempt to handle it and is asked to vacate the area and notify the RCMP immediately.”
Any person with information with respect to this matter is requested to call the Banff RCMP at (403) 763-6600. Persons who wish to remain anonymous may call Crimestoppers at 800-222-8477 or by internet at www.tipsubmit.com.
