On December 25, 2014, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed by the Director of Law Enforcement to investigate a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer-involved shooting.
The morning of (December 25), at 9 a.m., the RCMP received a complaint of a robbery at the Toronto Dominion Bank automated teller machine (ATM) in Vegreville, Alberta. RCMP officers responded and during their investigation encountered a lone adult male. During this encounter, a single shot was fired by an RCMP officer resulting in a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the adult male. The male was transported to hospital by ambulance and is in stable condition. His identity is not being released at this time. A replica firearm has been recovered on scene.
Further investigation appears to have established the initial complaint of a robbery at the bank was false and that false complaint is now under investigation by the RCMP.
ASIRT’s investigation continues, and as such, additional information on the incident cannot be released.
ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently, and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious in jury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
