Airdrie RCMP Warn of Internet Frauds

Airdrie, Alberta – Airdrie RCMP would like to remind the public to stay safe and secure online as internet frauds are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

RCMP has recently received information of an elaborate online fraud claiming to be Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Fraud occurs as follows;

·         Subject receives an email claiming to be from CRA. Email states that funds need to be deposited into subject’s account, provides a link.

·         When link is clicked on, redirects to a site which appears similar to CRA website.

·         Site then requests information such as Mother’s Maiden Name, Social Insurance Number and Credit Card Info.

Safety tips to remember; If something doesn’t feel right, it’s likely not right. If in doubt about a communication alleging to be from a bank or government agency, call the agency and confirm. Do not provide information online, and be cautious clicking on links from unknown sources.

RCMP has yet to receive any calls regarding this scam, and this information is disseminated purely for the safety and security of the public.
