AFPA 2nd Quarter Results

Strong lumber sector boosts Alberta forest products industry…

Revenues rise 10% in Q2-2014Edmonton, November 20, 2014 – Values of lumber, pulp and paper, and panelboard manufactured by Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) members totaled approximately $728 million for the 2nd quarter of 2014. The value of production was up $67 million or 10% from the same period last year. Compared to the 1st quarter of 2014, production values increased by $10 million or 1.4%.

“We’re continuing to see positive, sustainable growth in Alberta’s forest industry,” said AFPA President and CEO Paul Whittaker. “It’s the result of a number of factors, including investments in efficiency at the mill level and in diversifying our markets at the corporate level. The results are great news not only for the forest industry, but also for those who work in industries that service the forestry business and sell or use our products.”

Alberta’s home building sector is one industry that is closely linked to forestry. The province is on track to post Canada’s strongest growth in housing starts for 2014. “Wood is the largest component of new homes and we expect builders will use even more forest products when Alberta joins B.C. and Ontario in allowing construction of six-storey wood-frame multi-family buildings,” noted Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Alberta CEO Jim Rivait. “Using wood is a valuable option for builders because it has a great environmental profile and allows us to create safe, affordable housing options that promote urban density.”

Alberta’s forest industry is a significant social and economic contributor to 50 communities throughout the province. The industry’s commitment to the environment, research and innovation, and its employees makes it an ideal place to build a career.
