EDMONTON, Alberta—While residents were evacuating the city of Fort McMurray during the wildfire, AFD Petroleum employees and volunteers were busy topping up their vehicles for the long drive to safety.
When the evacuation started on May 4, the AFD Petroleum camp 27 kilometres north of Fort McMurray took in as many people as it could safely hold. However, only hours later, the camp was also evacuated due to changing winds.
Still looking to help, AFD set up two fuelling sites along Highway 63 south. The first site was a camp located just before Mariana Lake at Mile Marker 147. The second site was a south-facing AFD Petroleum truck parked just past the Stoney Mountain Road turnoff. This truck was moved frequently to keep south of the fire, but social media updates kept city residents informed of the new locations.
Fort McMurray resident Danielle Hayward said, “When many people were running out of fuel on the side of the road, I saw posts that your company was offering fuel from a camp off of Highway 63… It was an incredibly stressful time and the generosity of so many people and companies such as yourselves has been truly amazing.”
“I would like to thank your organization so much for providing gas and diesel to the many people who had to leave their home in a hurry due to the fires in Fort McMurray,” said David White, another Fort McMurray resident. “This was a gesture that I will remember for the rest of my life since it was the difference in my family spending the night on side of Highway 63 out of fuel [versus] making it south to spend with our family.”
“I would personally like to thank all of our customers, employees, friends, and volunteers who donated their time and effort to help those in need,” said Curtis Small, Senior Area Manager of AFD’s Fort McMurray division. “About 100 vehicles were abandoned along Highway 63 because people ran out of fuel, but that number probably would have been much higher if it weren’t for our hardworking team. Many of us are Fort McMurray residents ourselves. Even though they were facing the same challenges as the evacuees, the team still went above and beyond to help however they could.”
