Banff: RCMP Traffic Services Charge in Massive Traffic Stop Drug Seizure

Banff, Alta. – On June 14, 2016 a member of the RCMP Traffic Services Roving Traffic Unit stopped a vehicle travelling east bound on Highway 1 for a speeding violation. The driver, and lone occupant, was detained while a Parks Canada narcotics detection dog was deployed and a positive confirmation of an odour of a controlled substance was identified. Upon further investigation the driver was subsequently arrested for possession of illicit drugs.

Upon concluding a full search of the vehicle 8 grams of Marihuana, 23,860 grams of crystallized MDMA and $3,900.00 in Canadian currency was seized. The estimated street value of the seized contraband is $1,431,600.00.

Stefan Lelic, a 22 year old male from Calgary, was arrested for possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime under $5000. The accused appeared in court on June 20, 2016 and was release on $20,000.00 cash bail. He will next appear in court on July 20, 2016.

These drugs, and in their quantity, had they reached communities in Alberta could have had a devastating effect on the health and safety of Albertans.
