HIGH RIVER, AB: Construction on the Town of High River’s innovative natural playground in Birchwood Park is now complete and the playground will open to the public on Tuesday, May 24. It is the first of its kind in the community and will encourage children to use imaginative and open-ended play.
Natural playgrounds provide a means for active play, while also allowing children to create their own play experience through the use of playground features and their imaginations.
The playground incorporates small hills and embankments along with logs, boulders, and sideways tree play structures to allow for open-ended play. There are also several log tables with stump seats, as well as an embankment slide.
Traditional safety standards have been maintained and, whenever possible, natural materials were used in the construction.
This project was made possible thanks to a grant from The Calgary Foundation. The original equipment at Birchwood Park was damaged beyond repair in the 2013 flood.
The entrance to Birchwood Park is located near the intersection of 1 Avenue and 1 Street S.E.
