Strathmore… The 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games in Strathmore came to a close on July 19.

“The last few days have been nothing short of amazing,” said David Eggen, Minister of Culture and Tourism. “The displays of athleticism, sportsmanship and comraderie that we have seen at the Games are absolutely wonderful, and exactly what these Games are all about. Congratulations to all the atheletes, coaches, organizers, volunteers and the Town of Strathmore for a great 55 Plus Games!”

More than 1,200 participants from across Alberta competed in 17 events over four days between July 16-19.
“Thank you and congratulations to the host Strathmore organization, the Alberta 55 Plus Association, and all the competitors who participated in the Games”, said John Short, Chair of the Alberta Sport Connection. “The Games theme was Our Time to Shine, and they did. It was a terrific four-day athletic and cultural event”.

President’s Spirit of Participation Award: Awarded to the zone that exemplifies the true spirit of participation in the 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games – Zone 2 (Big Country)

Alberta 55 Plus Zone Championship Trophy: Awarded to the zone achieving the most medal points for activities in the 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games – Zone 3 (Calgary)

Lieutenant Governor’s Cup: Awarded to the zone showing the greatest improvement from the previous Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games – Zone 2 (Big Country)

Alberta 55 Plus Wild Rose Award: Presented to the eldest participant at the 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Winter Games – Willie McGregor, from Bonnyville, 92 years young – floor curling, Zone 7 (North East)

The Alberta 55 Plus Games are coordinated by the Alberta Sport Connection (ASC) with support from the Alberta 55 plus Association. The games are a provincial initiative to encourage Albertans to pursue athletic, physical, and social activities. Organized by the Strathmore Alberta 55 Plus Society, the Games are made possible with the assistance of dozens of corporate sponsors, community partners, the Alberta government and close to 600 volunteers. The Theme of the 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games was “Our Time to Shine”.

In Canada, 2015 has been declared the Year of Sport. It celebrates the role that sport plays in our country and encourages Canadians to participate in and seek the benefits of sport.
