Cochrane RCMP charge driver with Aggravated Assault on Police Officer

Cochrane, Alta. – Cochrane RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) investigated an assault on an RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit member, resulting in several charges against 30-year-old Cody Lee Brown.

Early in the morning on April 16, 2016, an Integrated Traffic Unit RCMP member was dragged down the road as he was assisting an Alberta Sheriff in investigating a suspicious vehicle. The driver of the suspect vehicle fled into Calgary.   An investigation was launched by Cochrane GIS and a suspect was identified.  On April 21, 2016 Cody Brown was arrested outside the City of Calgary without incident.  Cochrane Integrated Traffic Unit members worked with Cochrane and Strathmore RCMP to effect this arrest.

Cody Brown has been charged with:

  • Aggravated assault on a police officer
  • Assault Police Officer
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm
  • Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
  • Two  charges under the Traffic Safety Act.

Brown is currently in custody and his next court appearance is scheduled for May 24, 2016 in Cochrane.

The RCMP officer involved in this assault was released from the hospital but remains off duty and recovering from his injuries.  The Sheriff was not injured.

“The safety of our members on the road is always a top priority,” said Superintendent Ian Lawson, Officer in Charge of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services, “every single traffic stop presents a risk to members and we remind the public to be considerate of the job our Traffic members are doing.”
