OTTAWA, April 24, 2015 – Senator Doug Black today issued the following statement after learning of the death of Senate Speaker Pierre Claude Nolin:
“I was saddened by the tragic news of Senate Speaker Pierre Claude Nolin’s passing. He was a truly great Canadian who had dedicated much of his life to public service on behalf of Quebecers and all Canadians.
He was a champion of the Senate reform agenda and throughout his term as a Senator, and later Speaker, he pushed to bring increased transparency and accountability to Canada’s upper chamber.
When I was sworn in as a Senator in 2012, Speaker Nolin was extremely supportive and helpful in my new role. His guidance helped me, and many other Senators, adjust to the life of a Senator. His thoughtful approach played an instrumental role in creating an environment in the Senate chamber that welcomed healthy debate.
His loss will be felt by all in the Senate and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
We’ve lost a great Canadian.”
