Rio 2016: Canadian Morning Wrap-up on Day 9: Three swimmers, men’s wheelchair relay off to finals
Sept. 16, 2016 – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Three Canadians will swim in tonight’s finals and the men’s wheelchair relay will also battle for medals following Friday morning’s action at the Paralympic Games.
In morning heats at the pool, Morgan Bird of Calgary was sixth in the women’s S8 50-m freestyle, Tess Routliffe of Caledon, Ont., seventh in the women’s S7 100-m freestyle and Zack McAllister of Lethbridge, Alta., eighth in the men’s S8 50-m freestyle, as all three earned their tickets to tonight’s final.
In athletics, Brent Lakatos, Dorval, Que., Curtis Thom, Mississauga, Ont., Tristan Smyth, Maple Ridge, B.C., and Alexandre Dupont, St-Rémi, Que., ranked fourth in the 4X400-m relay heats. The final is Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
In para-cycling, Tristan Chernove of Powell River, B.C., was vying for a fourth medal at the Games in the men’s C1-2-3 road race. Chernove, the time trial winner on Wednesday, was the top Canadian but did not reach the podium placing 15th.
In para-archery, Karen Van Nest of Wiarton, Ont., lost in the round of 16 dropping her opening match to Nur Syahidah of Singapore 140-135 in the women’s individual compound.

Men’s T53-54 4X400-m relay: Canada was fourth in heats to advance to final on Saturday. Canadian racers were Brent Lakatos, Dorval, Que., Curtis Thom, Mississauga, Ont., Tristan Smyth, Maple Ridge, B.C., and Alexandre Dupont, St-Rémi, Que.
Men’s road race C1-2-3: Tristen Chernove, Powell River, B.C., was 15th. Michael Sametz, Calgary, and Ross Wilson, Sherwood Park, Alta., did not finish.

Men’s S7 100-m freestyle: Jean-Michel Lavallière, Quebec City, was 12th in heats and did not advance.
Women’s S7 100-m freestyle: Tess Routliffe, Caledon, Ont., was seventh in heats and advances to final at 5:36 p.m.
Men’s S8 50-m freestyle: Zack McAllister, Lethbridge, Alta., was eighth in heats and advances to final at 5:57 p.m.
Women’s S8 50-m freestyle: Morgan Bird, Calgary was sixth in heats and advances to final at 6:03 p.m.: Abi Tripp, Kingston, Ont., and Sabrina Duchesne, Quebec City, were 10th and 13th in heats and did not advance.
Men’s S13 100-m freestyle: Tyler Mrak, West Vancouver, was 22nd in heats and did not advance.
