Cochrane RCMP investigating man involved in vehicle thefts and collisions

Cochrane, Alberta – An  Alberta man is in custody and is facing numerous charges as members of the Cochrane and Canmore RCMP detachments continue their investigation into an incident involving two stolen vehicles.

The morning of September 13th, at approximately 11:00 A.M., members of the Cochrane RCMP Detachment were advised that an erratic driver in a stolen cube van may be heading toward Cochrane from the Airdrie area.  Detachment members located the van a short time later in the Sunset neighbourhood of Cochrane and attempted to stop it but the driver ignored police and continued driving, turning south onto  Highway 22.  As the suspect vehicle entered the intersection of Highway 1A and Highway 22, it collided with another vehicle.  The driver did not stop at the scene of the collision and kept driving south on Highway 22 until colliding with a second vehicle at the intersection of Griffin Road.   The suspect exited the stolen van and ran up to the vehicle with which he just collided, a Jeep Wrangler, and had its driver get out before jumping into the driver’s seat and fleeing the intersection.  The suspect continued south on Highway 22 in the stolen Jeep.  Fortunately, no one was injured in either of the collisions in Cochrane nor during the theft of the Jeep.

Witnesses reported seeing the stolen Jeep Wrangler traveling west on Highway 1 and driving into oncoming traffic.  Members of the Canmore RCMP Detachment located the vehicle and suspect who was now breaking into vehicles in their area.  The incident ended when the stolen vehicle hit a police vehicle and the suspect was apprehended trying to flee the scene.

The investigation into this matter is continuing and charges are pending.  At this time, the identity of the suspect is not available but once charges have been laid, an update will be provided with additional details.
