EDMONTON, AB: Wildrose Leader Brian Jean released the following statement on Premier Rachel Notley failing to give a clear commitment on promoting and advocating for the Keystone XL pipeline project in light of the results of the U.S. presidential election.
“President-elect Donald Trump made a commitment during the election campaign to approve the Keystone XL pipeline project after years of delays and the recent decision by President Obama to block the pipeline’s construction.
“Alberta’s economy remains largely exposed to trade with the U.S. and given important trade agreements like NAFTA and the Trans-Pacific Partnership now face opposition, it’s more important than ever for Alberta to promote pipeline construction in all directions.
“While it’s not up to subnational governments to approve or veto pipelines, Premier Notley had a chance today to make clear the Alberta government will be relentless in advocating for Alberta’s energy sector to a new government in Washington, but failed. It’s my hope that in the coming days the NDP government will reverse its position opposing Keystone XL pipeline and instead ensure that policy makers in Washington know that the project is a priority for Alberta.”
