Calgary Cancer Centre Hits Key Milestones

Plans are on track to get shovels in the ground for the Calgary Cancer Centre next year.

The province is holding the first public open house on the project on October 12 as it prepares to issue a request for proposals. It is also confirming what treatment and research programs will be delivered to Alberta families and health workers.

The facility, which will open in 2024, will include:

  • 160 inpatient beds
  • 12 new radiation vaults, plus three shelled spaces for future development
  • Clinical trials unit and research laboratories
  • Outpatient cancer clinics

“This is a critical, priority project that will deliver better cancer care for families in Calgary and across the province. We know how important it is to patients and frontline health workers and we are taking the right steps to ensure we have the right plan and to start construction in 2017.”

Brandy Payne, Associate Minister of Health

Alberta Infrastructure is evaluating responses to a Request for Qualifications that ended Sept. 22. The formal Request for Proposals will be posted later this month.

“In addition to providing compassionate care to people throughout southern Alberta, the Calgary Cancer project will create hundreds of family-supporting jobs and will be a major economic driver in Calgary during its construction phase. With the Alberta Jobs Plan, we are investing in projects that build strong communities, and support the provincial economy.”

Brian Mason, Minister of Infrastructure

“The new Calgary Cancer Centre is an opportunity to support cancer patients in what may be one of the most defining moments of their lives. I can only hope that the new cancer centre will enable more stories like my own where, thanks to compassionate medical care, a diagnosis of cancer can act as an opportunity of strength.”

Matthew Frank, cancer survivor and Registered Nurse, Foothills Medical Centre, AHS

The renovations to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the Foothills Medical Centre that improve infection prevention and control and patient care will also begin soon. These needed renovations mean cancer patients will be able to continue receiving safe, high quality care while the Calgary centre is under construction.

The renovations will improve infection prevention and control, patient comfort, and the ability of staff to care for the patients they serve.
