Albertans Invited to Discuss Current Status and Future of Heritage Fund


The Legislative Assembly of Alberta’s Standing Committee on the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund will hold its annual public meeting on Thursday, October 27, 2016, at 7 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting and take part in the discussion about the status and future of the Fund.

“Every Albertan should have a keen awareness of the Heritage Savings Trust Fund,” said Craig Coolahan, MLA for Calgary-Klein and chair of the committee. “The Fund is an investment in our province’s future, and therefore it is important that Albertans know how it is managed and how it is performing.”

Live Question and Answer Session

Following an update on the Fund by Alberta Treasury Board and Finance and Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) there will be a Q and A portion where Albertans can submit questions in person, via e-mail (committees@assembly.ab.ca) or through the Legislative Assembly social media.

Status of the Fund

The Fund earned a net income of $1.238 billion for the year ended March 31, 2016. The net assets held in the Fund totalled $17.7 billion. The investment breakdown includes 46.8 per cent in equities, 18.7 per cent in fixed-income assets and 33.4 per cent in inflation-sensitive and alternative assets. A 4.7 per cent rate of return was achieved.

About the Standing Committee

On a yearly basis the Standing Committee reviews and approves the Fund’s performance and annual report. It also receives and reviews the quarterly reports on the Fund’s operations and results, holds public meetings with Albertans to report on investment activities and results and reports to the Legislative Assembly on whether the mission of the Fund is being fulfilled.
