Airdrie Families Get Round-the-Clock Access to Urgent Care

Airdrie residents are getting 24-7 urgent care close to home, thanks to a collaborative, patient-focused approach to health planning that brings health leaders and regional voices together.

“We promised stability in the system and to listen to regional voices, and that’s what we’re doing. Airdrie is only the most recent example of how getting out of the boardroom and into the community gets us real results that work for patients.”

Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health

The government and Alberta Health Services have been meeting with local health providers, community leaders and citizens to improve access to urgent health care in Airdrie and area. A plan is being developed to extend current hours at Airdrie Urgent Care to 24-7. This plan will be completed by Sept. 30, with implementation expected early in 2017.

“We are pleased to be moving forward with expanding our hours to provide urgent care in the community 24-7. We know 24-7 health services are an important issue in Airdrie, and we are committed to continuing to partner with the primary care network and the community to deliver health-care services to the greater Airdrie region.

Dr. Verna Yiu, President and CEO, Alberta Health Services

“This is an exciting day for Airdrie.  Access to 24-7 health services within our own City has been a long time coming. This is a good first step in becoming one of Alberta’s healthiest communities. I would like to extend thanks to the Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services and our community, who have worked together to make this critical access a reality.”

Peter Brown, Airdrie mayor

“It is imperative that decision makers visit and work with a community to truly know what the needs of the community are. This announcement is a good first step.

I look forward to continuing working with Minister Hoffman and her staff.”

Michelle Bates, Chair of Airdrie Health Foundation

The government has also used this approach in other communities like Sylvan Lake and Sundre. In fact, Terry Leslie, Sundre mayor, sent the following comments to Minister Hoffman regarding this approach.

“Because of your leadership, dedication, willingness to trust, guidance and direction, the concerns presented to you have been heard, and the solutions proposed by the community, have been put in place. This is a shining example of how government should work with Albertans.”
